Historic Route 66 is being considered for designation as a National Historic Trail. Here is an article with a nice video and a link to the legislation (H.R.-801) which has passed the House but is waiting for action by the Senate. 

Thanks for the links. I recognized some of the locations in the video even though they went by very fast. Contacted my Senators about the legislation.

They'd better act quickly. Route 66 and its small towns are disappearing as quickly as civility in our modern world.

I doubt that special designation will stop the progress that causes towns to be casualties of modern progress. It may get some buildings saved and perhaps help some of the byways that the present route has bypassed.
