The Black Hills and Badlands HOP

(The Head Out Program)

October 6 – 10, 2020

The Escapees RV Club is offering an amazing set of combination tours for the Black Hills and Badlands. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, Custer State Park, the Presidential Summer White House to former President Calvin Coolidge and Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the surrounding areas are a few of these tours!

Mount Rushmore National Memorial contains granite faces carved into the Black Hills depicting U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. These stately faces are nearly 60 feet high. George Washington’s nose is 21 feet tall, and each of the eyes on Mount Rushmore is about 11 feet wide, with each mouth is about 18 feet wide. The memorial was completed in 1941 under the direction of artist Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln.

Located in the middle of America’s heartland, are a wooded and mountainous region called, the Black Hills. The Lakota Sioux tribe called this mountain range Pahá Sápa, or “Hills That Are Black.”  From a distance, the hills are dark in appearance with mostly ponderosa pines.

On the other hand, the Badlands are a sunny, desert-like area with cliffs and gullies. The Badlands are indeed a testament to the power of the forces of wind and water!

Located in the beautiful Black Hills, is Deadwood, founded in 1875, being the location of the last major gold rush in the United States. The booming town gained a reputation as a rough-and-rugged mining camp where Wild Bill Hickok was killed, and Calamity Jane earned her claim to fame. While in Deadwood, you can study the historical narratives of the Native American Lakota tribe and their hunt for the bison.

Custer State Park and wildlife preserve is famous for bison, but also has mule deer, white-tailed deer, pronghorns, mountain goats, coyotes, elk and bighorn sheep. Custer State Park has beautiful scenic drives and is one of the nation’s largest state park.

Before it’s closing in 2002, this area had the largest and deepest Black Hills gold mine in North America!

My wife and I work camp there during the Summer time.   This is an excellent choice.   Well done...

I used to volunteer at Custer State Park. Heart Ranch is a good choice for the HOP.
